SUPPORT STATEMENT FOR NATIONAL FREE CHINA RALLY

I join with you in remembering the tragic massacre of pro-democracy activists on Tiananmen Square 16 years ago and the many people who have suffered violence at the hands of the Chinese Government since that time.
I have consistently endeavoured to draw attention to China’s ongoing disregard for human rights through my work in the Parliament and the community. It is unacceptable that basic rights, such as freedom of association and belief, continue to be violated in China.
These issues are directly relevant to Australia. They affect the relatives of Australian citizens, they are occurring in our own Asian-Pacific region and they must not be ignored in the context of free trade negotiations with China.
While our trade relationship with China is important to Australia’s economy, we must not pursue trade at any cost. We should not abandon our most fundamental values for the sake of economic gain.
我今天和你們站在一起紀念那些在16年前天安門慘案的死去的民主人士以及在中共政權下受到蹂躪的人們。
我一如既往的通過我在議會的工作和社團呼籲關注中國對人權的漠視，中國對基本人權，如集會和信仰的不斷的踐踏是不可以接受的。
這些問題直接牽扯的澳洲，他影響了澳洲公民的親人，這些都是與中國的自由貿易協定的談判內不可忽視的內容
我們與中國的貿易關係對於澳洲經濟是很重要的，但是，我們不能為了一味追求貿易而不計代價，我們不應該為了經濟利益而犧牲我們基本的理念。
