Pure Land/ink and color painting

I very seldom add any poems or text to my paintings. For one thing, I don’t leave much space in my paintings for writing; for another, just copying some old poetry onto a painting seems to lack any originality. Furthermore, it is extremely pretentious to write doggerel with a bad meter or unclear or vulgar meaning on a painting; this is a good way to make oneself a laughingstock.

Although small, this painting is carefully crafted, and achieves an effect of great delicacy. The fullness of the scene would make adding text seem superfluous. I really feel that it is not saitable to add too much text to a painting. A painting should speak for itself; as the Chinese saying goes, “there’s no need to add feet to a snake.” When I do write this kind of short “voice over” message, is purely to illuminate my mental state or artistic insights of that time. Reading or not reading the message will not affect a viewer’s impression of the painting as a whole.@
