[流行美語]時間又到了。Michael和李華都在紐約上大學。Michael對紐約很熟，因此經常帶李華到一些著名的地方去參觀。今天他倆要去紐約的大都會藝術博物館去听講演。李華將學到兩個常用語：neat和sharp。
L: Michael，我能夠把你拽著一起去听這個演講，真不容易。今天講 話的這個人在數學和藝術方面都有博士學位。他講話的題目就 是：數學和藝術的關系。
M: I’m sure the lecture will be really neat.
L: 什么？ Neat? 那不是整齊，乾淨的意思嗎？
M: No. Neat, it’s a word used here to describe something that is good.
L: 噢，neat在這里是指某樣東西很好，那你為什么不直接說好，而 非要說neat呢？
M: Neat is very conversational.
L: Neat這個詞很口語化！那是不是任何時候我要說什么東西好都可以 用neat這個詞吶？
M: Neat can be used to describe an idea, a concept.
L: Neat可以用來指一個好的主意，好的概念。今天講演的內容就是 數學和藝術的會合。這是一個很好的概念。
M: Well, Li Hua, you find the concept interesting, right?
L: 對，我覺得這個概念很有意思。
M: Well, if it holds your interest and you like the idea, then you can call it neat.
L: 噢，只要我有興趣，覺得是個好主意，我就可以說： That’s neat!
M: You’re right.
L: 如果我跟一些朋友出去玩，有人建議去喝茶，聊天。要是我覺得 很好的話，我也可以說：That’s a neat idea.
M: Certainly. Hey, we are running pretty late. Let’s hurry up.
L: 喲，對了，太晚了。赶快走吧！
(演講之后)
L: 我覺得他講得真好。我從來沒有想到數學和藝術有那么多關系。 他講得很清楚。現在我對這個題目懂了好多。
M: Yeah, I really agree. The speaker was really intelligent, you could say he is sharp.
L: Sharp，不是指一把刀快不快的意思嗎？ 那天有 個人說我很sharp， 當時我也不懂他是什么意思。那么說，他是在說我好咯！
M: Absolutely！Sharp is an adjective that can be used to describe a person who is really smart.
L: 你是說，sharp這個詞可以用來形容一個非常聰明的人，也就是 腦子很敏銳的人。那我們的朋友王濤總是得到好分數，我可以 說：He’s very sharp。
M: He certainly is.
L: 那這個詞sharp是不是跟形容刀快不快的sharp是同一個字呢？
M: Same word.
L: 你能不能用sharp這個詞來指一本很好的書？
M: No, it is not used to describe things, only people. You could not call my apartment sharp.
L: 噢，sharp用在這個意思的時候只能形容人，不能指東西。我還不 能說你的宿舍很sharp。 Michael，你那宿舍亂得象豬窩，怎么打掃 也稱不上sharp了。
M: I know. My mother said the same thing.
L: 你看，我沒說錯吧！連你媽都這么說。不過，Michael，盡管我老 是跟你開玩笑，我倒覺得你很sharp，腦子很清楚，很快。
M: Thanks, Li Hua. I think you’re very sharp too.
